The idea for The Orchid House was hatched outside school gates, where Ruth and Libby, the two directors of the company, met daily on the school run. Ruth had fifteen years’ experience in the interiors retail business; Libby had a keen interest in interior design and had written on the subject for magazines.
Knowing that there was a strong demand in the Keswick and Lake District area for a shop selling stylish interior furnishings, the friends threw themselves into the venture, opening The Orchid House in 2006.
The result is a relaxed and fun environment in which to shop, with a dazzling mix of gifts, from contemporary to quirky and sophisticated

to kitsch. Ruth and Libby have a talent for finding exceptional pieces and putting them together in eye-catching displays that offer wonderfully creative ideas for the home.
The first year has been hectic but exciting; and The Orchid House now has a loyal and extensive customer base across the Lake District – and way beyond.
